Is sales tax on online purchases outside my home state ever charged? ?

I recently purchased a computer online from outside from my home state. I was charged a hefty sum sales tax that surprised me. I have bought many items online in the past, no sales tax, while they were out of state. Does this have anything to do with computers or I was lucking out? Thanks in advance for the information. Bob

Companies are required to collect sales taxes if having a presence in the state of the item being sent a. For example. If you ordered a computer from Best Buy on the Internet. They charge sales tax if they have a store in your state.
